How to Brew the Perfect Pour-Over at Home

How to Brew the Perfect Pour-Over at Home - Flavorful Bliss Coffee Company

The pour-over method is simple, meditative, and produces one of the cleanest, most flavorful cups you can make at home. Here's exactly how we do it — the same method we use to taste every roast before it ships.

What You'll Need

  • Pour-over dripper (Hario V60, Chemex, or Kalita Wave)
  • Gooseneck kettle
  • Coffee scale
  • Burr grinder
  • Filter paper
  • Fresh Flavorful Bliss beans ☕

The Recipe

  • Coffee: 25g
  • Water: 400g at 200°F (just off boil)
  • Grind: Medium-coarse — like raw sugar texture
  • Total brew time: 3 to 3.5 minutes

Step-by-Step

Step 1 — Rinse Your Filter

Place your filter in the dripper and rinse with hot water. This removes any paper taste and pre-heats your vessel. Discard the rinse water.

Step 2 — Grind Fresh

Grind 25g of coffee to a medium-coarse consistency right before brewing. Fresh-ground beans make a noticeable difference — never grind ahead of time. The moment you grind, the clock starts on flavor loss.

Step 3 — The Bloom

Add your grounds and start your timer. Pour just enough water to saturate all the grounds — about 50g. Watch it bubble and rise. That's CO2 releasing from fresh coffee. Wait 30 seconds.

Fresh coffee blooms. Stale coffee doesn't. This is the easiest way to tell if your beans are actually fresh.

Step 4 — The Pour

Starting at the center, pour in slow, steady circles working outward, then back in. Keep the water level consistent — don't let it drain completely between pours. Pour in stages:

  • 50g — bloom
  • 150g — first pour (at 30 sec)
  • 250g — second pour (at 1 min)
  • 400g — final pour (at 1 min 45 sec)

Step 5 — The Finish

Total brew time should be 3 to 3.5 minutes. If it's draining too fast, grind finer. Too slow, grind coarser. Pull the dripper, give your cup a gentle swirl, and pour. No bitterness. No guesswork. Just a clean, bright, flavorful cup.

The 5 Tips That Make the Biggest Difference

  1. Always buy fresh beans — Look for a roast date, not a best-by date. Roasted within 2 weeks is ideal.
  2. Nail your grind size — Medium-coarse for pour-over. Too fine = bitter. Too coarse = weak.
  3. Don't skip the bloom — 30 seconds. It unlocks full flavor and is the step most people skip.
  4. Water temp matters — 200°F. Just off boil. A $10 thermometer changes everything.
  5. Pour slow and steady — Rushing the pour rushes the extraction. Take your time.
